Headphones/Earphones 2013 (mini reviews)

 #headphones #earphones #reviews #klipsch #rockfile
This is not supposed to be a professional review of headphones. I did not put them to any tests more than my real world use. But, having used headphones since I was very young, I figured I would let you know what I found in a recent crop of listening devices.

I have used headphones/ear buds all my life.  I had a couple of nice sets as a kid and once I got into radio, always having my own pair of earphones was mandatory.  While I have friends who are die-hard Sennheiser fans, I gravitated to Sony On-ear Professional Headphones for brighter highs and a tighter sound. I used them for work and play for many, many years.

As the iPod grew in popularity, in-ear headphones began to appear. Recording artists use them on stage and a set comes bundled with every mp3 player these days.  But, the cheapies you get for free are really not worth listening to and you should upgrade immediately. (Although I have not tried the new Apple Earpods that came with my iPhone 5S, I will and let you know. They supposedly sound better than the older Apple Earbuds but are still not audiophile quality.)

Over the last few years, I tested a set of Audeo Perfect Fit earphones and they have been my favorite but they are pricey, currently around $229. I was sent a free pair for evaluation and they became my permanent set, I really loved the smooth sound. But, eventually the cables became frayed and the set needed to be replaced.  In normal use, these would have lasted a lot longer but I am pretty hard on my headsets.

At the time, connectivity with my iPhone was imperative and I got a pair of Klipsch S4i's in-ear headphones for Christmas. For the money, these headphones rival the much more expensive Audeo for less than half the cost.  I have had several recording artists comment on them while I was using them as interview monitors. It seems a lot of people in the music industry like the Klipcsh. Not only so they make music sound great but my phones calls (on iPhone 4) were clearer, too.

During a recent interview trip, I misplaced my Klipsch and decided to use the opportunity to try out some other headphones.  My first thought was to get bigger "cans" that would be harder to lose.  First up Beats, everybody has a pair....how bad could they be, right?  If you buy a pair of Beats, you should be beaten. Literally. These overpriced headphones are made decently well but sound terrible.  For the younger generation it is more about how they look than how they sound. WRONG! When it comes to music, don't short yourself. Unless all you listen to is rap, you will not enjoy these headphones with their exaggerated bass and unrealistic sound.

To prove that point, I picked up a pair of Noontec Zoro's, made by an Italian company to compete with Beats.  They look like Beats but they do not sound like them...they are much better. Their sound is much more balanced and clean.  And I got my pair for $63 on Amazon, Beats Solo sell for $179.  Although they sounded pretty good, after 29 years in the music industry, I needed something more. But you could do a lot worse than these for a lot more money.

Next, I found a pair of $150-$200 Sennheiser HD 380s for 99 bucks!  Although they have giant over-your-ear cans, I was excited to finally have some "audophile" headphones.  Boy, was I disappointed! While the sound was very balanced and clean, the HD headphones are really for home use. Their sensitivity needs more power and iPhones barely drive them enough.  The sound was great but they are just not built to be portable.  And since a lot of my listening is during dog walks in the South Florida Sun, these also make your head sweat quite a bit.

So, what did I finally decide on? Another pair of Klipsch s4i's. For the money, you cannot beat them. And they have been redesigned since my first pair.  The new flat cable is terrific and they sound better than ever.  Until I can afford to get a pair of x11i's ($350-$500), the x4i's suit my lifestyle and nit-picky, audiophile listening requirements for well under $100.

My Favorite HALLOWEEN / HORROR Flicks (video)

#halloween #horrormovies #rockfile
Keeping with the spirit of the day, I put together this list of my favorite Horror flicks.  Some you know, some you may not and I certainly may have missed a few. Just got the idea this morning and I picked 13 newer ones and 13 classics, listed in no particular order.

Recent scares:

Event Horizon
This sci-fi flick is basically a Hellraiser-type haunted house movie in space and I love it! Freeze frame those gory scenes for even more effect. I understand some of the actors had nightmares after...

Let The Right One In (2008)
Although I love the US remake, the original is a bit creepier. The book is also excellent!

Drag Me To Hell
Sam Raimi's return to horror is a great ride.

The Strangers
Nothing supernatural, more frightening because it could happen... and supposedly did.

High Tension
This gritty French film is exactly what the title suggests.

Frailty
Bill Paxton directed and stars in this little semi-lost classic.

The Descent
Scary times underground.

Martyrs
Of all the torture-porn movies that followed Hostel, this one bests it.

28 Days Later
Fast zombies are scary, too!

Splinter
This little "under the radar" thriller is a ton of fun.

Wolf Creek
Intense action in the outback.

The Mist
Even Stephen King likes the ending better than his own.

Sinister
We saw a sneak preview of this with the director and writer last year and loved it. One of the better scary flicks of late.

Classic Creepy:

Halloween
THE Classic.

An American Werewolf In London

One of the best films to mix comedy and horror, it's still funny and scary!

Evil Dead
The new reboot is worth watching but Sam Raimi's original is still the one to watch. (Folled by 2, same movie plus dark humor.)

Night Of The Living Dead

Few films touch the dread felt in the original.

Dawn Of The Dead

One of the few sequels that is better than the first. (The remake is also a favorite!)

The Thing (1982)

Creeped me out in the theater, I still get chills today.

Alien

SciFi Horror at it's best.

The Exorcist

Shocking in it's day, still a very creepy flick.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The original is still one of the best.

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978)

The dread I felt as a 12 year old in the theater still hits me when I watch it now.
Hellraiser
While the sequel is packed with even more gore, the original is creepier. Clive Barker is working on a reboot himself. Looking forward to it.

A Nightmare On Elm Street

You know the Freddy rhyme still creeps you. 1... 2.. Freddy's coming for you.

 Kwaidan
Some very scary scenes in this 1964 classic

All of these are available on Blu-ray, DVD and most of them are streaming. Enjoy!

PETER GREEN - "The Green Manalishi" (video)

#petergreen #fleetwoodmac #rockfile
Today is Peter Green's birthday (Oct 29) and while I was looking up content for his birthday post on Rockfile Radio, I found this great live version of The Green Manalishi. The song was an even bigger success for Judas Priest. Here are both versions:

CAPTAIN AMERICA THE WINTER SOLDIER Official Trailer (video)

#captainamerica #avengers #rockfile
Growing up I was more a Marvel Comics fan than a DC Comics fan. Just being honest. X-Men, Iron Man, Doctor Strange...these were my favorites. Overall I have been fairly happy with the Marvel movies, starting with Blade and up through Iron Man 3. Sure, a few were not great but things are on an upward trend. The second solo Thor movie comes out in a couple of week and now we have a trailer for the second solo Captain America flick.  I'm all in!
