PACIFIC RIM is going to rock! (video)

Since 2008′s Hellboy II, one of my favorite directors, Guillermo Del Toro, has been linked to all kinds of upcoming movies: The Hobbit, At the Mountains of Madness, Frankenstein, Slaughterhouse-Five and even a new adaptation of the Disney theme park ride, The Haunted Mansion. But, his first actual film in five years will hit theaters this coming July. It is called Pacific Rim. And I predict it will make the Transformers movies look like the kiddie movies they are.

The official synopsis reads like many anime and kid's shows but I have a hunch there will be a lot more to this flick. The viral marketing campaign just began and the trailer will debut December 12th, here is what else we know:

Official Synopsis:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Happy Birthday BRUCE LEE R.I.P. (video)

Happy Birthday to one of my biggest personal heroes, Bruce Lee!

Bruce Lee (traditional :李小龍; born Lee Jun-fan; 27 November 1940 – 20 July 1973) was an actor, martial arts instructor, philosopher, and filmmaker. The founder of Jeet Kune Do, Lee was the son of Cantonese opera star Lee Hoi-Chuen. He is widely considered by commentators, critics, media and other martial artists to be one of the most influential martial artists of all time, and a pop culture icon of the 20th century. He is often credited with helping to change the way Asians were presented in American films.

RIVERSIDE to Release New Album in February (video)

One of my favorite bands is about to release a new album! No time like the present to get you up to speed on the best band you have never heard!  Although I fell in love with their music immediately, it was not until I saw them live in 2008 that Riverside truly became one of my all-time favorite rock bands.

If you ever wondered what Pink Floyd would sound like if they formed in the 21st century, it might have sounded like Riverside.  I have posted some older tunes below to get you in the mood for the new stuff!

Here is the band's official release about the new album:

Poland's progressive rockers RIVERSIDE have just completed their fifth studio album, SHRINE OF NEW GENERATION SLAVES, and are proud to announce the effort will see a North American release on February 5, 2013.   Out on longtime record label InsideOut Music, the album will also be available in Europe on January 21, 2013.

SHRINE OF NEW GENERATION SLAVES was recorded at Serakos Studio in Warsaw, Poland, where Reality Dream Trilogy was also tracked.  Recorded with Magda Srzednicka and Robert Srzednicki, the album offers nearly an hour of classic RIVERSIDE music.

Vocalist Mariusz explains, "In 2012 we've been focusing on the work on the new album, and trying to prove, mostly to ourselves, that we can still surprise with something, and what's most important - create an album that would become our showpiece, music-wise and lyrics-wise.  The title might sound a bit intricate, but the acronym will definitely explain what we did with our music this time."

Fans can read about the album's recording process on the band's blog here, and a video interview that was done with RIVERSIDE directly from the studio can be seen here.

The artwork was designed by Travis Smith, who has done most of the album artwork for bands such as Opeth and Katatonia as well as the Avenged Sevenfold Nightmare cover, which many regarded as the best hard rock album cover of 2011.

SHRINE OF NEW GENERATION SLAVES is the follow up to the band's 2009 release, Anno Domini High Definition, which entered the Poland charts at #1 and has since hit gold album status.  In 2011, RIVERSIDE also released an EP titled Memories In My Head to celebrate the band's 10th anniversary.

RIVERSIDE Discography:
Out Of Myself - CD 2003
Voices In My Head - EP 2004
Second Life Syndrome - CD 2005
Rapid Eye Movement - CD 2007
Reality Dream - 2DVD/2CD 2008/2009
Anno Domini High Definition - CD 2009
Memories In My Head - EP 2011
Shrine Of New Generation Slaves - CD 2013

RIVERSIDE Line-Up:
Mariusz Duda - Vocals, Bass, Acoustic Guitar
Piotr Grudzi - Guitar
Piotr Kozieradzki - Drums
Micha Apaj - Keyboards

The band is going out on the road with another favorite of mine, Jolly.  More about them in another post!

Happy Birthday CARL SAGAN! (video)

I have decided that growing up with NASA, Star Trek, Jacques Cousteau, Carl Sagan and my parents are the main reasons I have imagination and drive today. PORCUPINE TREE: Octane Twisted coming Nov. 19th! (video)

My favorite band (and future subject for my "I love this band" feature), Porcupine Tree, is about to release a new double live album, Octane Twisted.  I have been a fan for more than a decade and they continue to grow and expand their musical vision. If you have not seen them live...you are missing out.

From their official site:

"Octane Twisted" the new double CD live album including bonus DVD will be released on Kscope Records on November 19th. A regular 2 cd only version will be available at a later date.

CD 1 comprises the whole of "The Incident" recorded at the Riviera, Chicago 2010.
CD 2 track listing is as follows - with tracks 5 to 7 recorded at the Royal Albert Hall.

1. Hatesong (9.57)
2. Russia on Ice / The Pills I'm Taking (15.02)
3. Stars Die (5.57)
4. Bonnie the Cat (6.11)
5. Even Less (14.28)
6. Dislocated Day (7.05)
7. Arriving Somewhere But Not Here (12.59)

The bonus DVD, which is a 6 camera shoot production, was never intended to be a standalone DVD release but nicely documents the live performance of "The Incident" in front of a typically lively Chicago audience.

Richard Barbieri and Gavin Harrison discuss the new live album:

A track from the Bonus DVD:

Start here and work your way back, the entire Porcupine Tree catalog is still in "heavy rotation" during my personal listening. Upcoming posts will highlight their individual releases and members.

Rock your day!

MASS EFFECT: The Best Game Trilogy Ever! (video)

Really! I have never been more emotionally invested in any game series. The stories are top notch and the execution is very "cinematic". November 6th you can play the complete, epic story, with over 75 hours of content. This marks the first time Mass Effect 1 has been available for the PS3.

The Disney Star Wars Brouhaha (video)

Like most people, the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm (Star Wars/Indiana Jones) this week gave me a moment of pause. Unlike most people, I like both Star Wars and Star Trek. Each satisfies portions of my sci-fi entertainment needs. I appreciate what George Lucas and Gene Roddenberry created and I have received much enjoyment from both and their sometimes creative, sometimes crappy, offshoots.  No one is perfect.  I overlook the flaws to enjoy the vision of the greater wholes.

I am also not thrilled with a few giant corporate entities owning all of my favorite brands.  As someone who supports art and music on local levels, it is scary to think a few companies will control most of what we see and hear. But, if Star Wars had to get bought by any corporate giant, I am glad it was Disney.  Let's look at recent history:

-Disney bought The Muppets in 2004 and we got:

-Disney bought Pixar in 2006 and we got WALL-E (2008), Up (2009), Toy Story 3 (2010) and Brave (2012). (Cars 2 (2011), too, but everyone needs to make $.)

-Disney bought Marvel in 2009 and we got:

It seems Disney has a history of picking the right "fan boys" (and girls) for the jobs of continuing these huge brands.  Disney now owns Lucasfilm. George Lucas stays on as creative consultant and his partner, producer Kathleen Kennedy becomes the President and Brand Manager. Disney is also leaving ILM to continue as it is.

Although we have no choice but to wait and see, I am kind of looking forward to what this merger brings.  Whatever comes in the future, we still have the originals... in slightly altered and updated forms. (-']

P.S. I liked J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009) and I am looking forward to the new one next year!
