<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbbnLkUE43dIcV-SuzhIKtZnURsilK0QxPXO4OQR71VaZaI2n9MzuBF9TsYRfvVi3MFYVfF5HfSQBtVToLYtTJ2MQOq8AYCiSIgi8ukjSJYAyUxUnX-4K2eU4Rq9WVqxYkvfulsoYVb6ya/s1600/freeradioimage.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="720" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbbnLkUE43dIcV-SuzhIKtZnURsilK0QxPXO4OQR71VaZaI2n9MzuBF9TsYRfvVi3MFYVfF5HfSQBtVToLYtTJ2MQOq8AYCiSIgi8ukjSJYAyUxUnX-4K2eU4Rq9WVqxYkvfulsoYVb6ya/s320/freeradioimage.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I've been in the radio industry long enough to see trends come and go more than once. There is a lot of talk this week about the new <b>Ed Sheeran </b>song and why it should or shouldn't be played by rock radio. Ed is a great pop artist with good songs who puts on a stellar show. But no one would ever confuse him with rock anything.<br />
<br />
There was thinking back in the 80's and 90's that playing one song from an artist outside the format could "steal" some of those listeners for a short time, raising your <b>cume</b>. <i>(Cume = People sampling the radio station for at least 5 minutes in a quarter hour.)</i> And while that may have been successful in a ratings battle, I was against then as I am now.<br />
<br />
Rock music has an honest and genuine quality to it. Just like the best of Country, R&B, etc. These days an audience is much more perceptive, they follow the social media of their favorites and try to get to know them inside and out. Just because a pop artist recycles some old blues and rock riffs does not make them a rock artist in the eyes and ears of a rock fan. Any cume a station would get from playing such a song would be overshadowed by the amount of <b>TSL</b><i> (Time Spent Listening = the other ratings data radio looks at and is exactly what it sounds like.)</i> a station would lose as their long-time fans ask, <u>"Why the hell is my rock station playing Ed Sheeran?"</u>. A rock fan may sit through it out of curiosity once or twice, but is a pop fan going to stay when you follow it up with <b>Metallica</b> or <b>Slipknot</b>?<br />
<br />
There are hundreds of rock songs released every year that do not get played because FM playlists are tighter, programmers are afraid to take chances with million dollar properties <i>(I don't blame them one bit)</i> and nostalgia seem to be taking over the thinking of anyone over 25 <i>(nothing wrong with that either)</i>. But playing a non-rock artist instead of a hard-working rock band out there touring and trying to make a living is really a slap in the face to them and their fans. When does a non-rock artist fit a rock station? Never to the fans of the music. Give that slot to a band that fits the format in everything they do.<br />
<br />
No matter what format the radio station is, it needs the best of that genre that it can be. Trying to "steal" a few people from another station with an out-of-format artist is a temporary boost at best and not worth what the station loses in listener loyalty in the long run. FM Radio needs to adjust it's thinking on this and many other sides of the battle for listener attention or it will get lost in the modern streaming world.<br />
<br />
More about that in a later blog.<br />

<br />
I am bringing back my blog. To be perfectly honest, I stopped when a "big time" photographer tried to sue me for using two pictures. Not only do I always give credit and link back to the source, they were two polarizing artists I don't even play or support and could not care less about deleting them from the blog. Needless to say, I won that battle but the process soured me on the blog experience. <i>(The whole thing was probably started by a young lawyer looking for an easy fix, I was never contacted directly. As we normally do in the radio/media world when we need something adjusted or removed.)</i><br />
<br />
My blog will now be filled with my opinions and not much more. Feel free to read and comment, I'd love to hear from you.<br />
<br />
Today's blog is about an old radio idea to play non-format artists to steal listeners from other stations. Enjoy<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>John Ono Lennon, MBE</b> (born<b> John Winston Lennon</b>; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980), was an English musician, singer and songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as a founder member of the rock band the <b>Beatles</b>, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. With <b>Paul McCartney</b>, he formed a songwriting partnership that is one of the most celebrated of the 20th century.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Born and raised in Liverpool, as a teenager Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze; his first band, the <b>Quarrymen</b>, evolved into the <b>Beatles</b> in 1960. When the group disbanded in 1970, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Working Class Hero". After his marriage to <b>Yoko Ono</b> in 1969, he changed his name to <b>John Ono Lennon</b>. Lennon disengaged himself from the music business in 1975 to raise his infant son Sean, but re-emerged with Ono in 1980 with the new album Double Fantasy. He was murdered three weeks after its release.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, writing, drawings, on film and in interviews. Controversial through his political and peace activism, he moved to Manhattan in 1971, where his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a lengthy attempt by Richard Nixon's administration to deport him, while some of his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement and the larger counterculture.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
As of 2012, Lennon's solo album sales in the United States exceeded 14 million and, as writer, co-writer or performer, he is responsible for 25 number-one singles on the US Hot 100 chart. In 2002, a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted him eighth and, in 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him the fifth-greatest singer of all time. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Stephen "Stevie" Ray Vaughan</b> (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990) was an American guitarist, singer, songwriter and record producer. Often referred to by his initials <b>SRV</b>, Vaughan is best known as a founding member and leader of<b> Double Trouble</b>. With drummer <b>Chris Layton</b> and bassist Tommy Shannon, they ignited the blues revival of the 1980s. With a career spanning seven years, Vaughan and <b>Double Trouble</b> consistently sold out concerts while their albums frequently went gold.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Vaughan was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and briefly lived in Graham, Texas. The younger brother of<b> Jimmie Vaughan</b>, Stevie started playing guitar at the age of seven and soon after formed several bands that occasionally performed in local nightclubs. At age 17, he dropped out of high school and moved to Austin to pursue a career in music, joining groups such as <b>Krackerjack</b>, the <b>Nightcrawlers</b>, and the <b>Cobras</b>. In 1977, he formed <b>Triple Threat Revue</b>, a band that regularly performed around Austin and eventually evolved into <b>Double Trouble</b>. In 1982, Vaughan and <b>Double Trouble</b> performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, catching the attention of musicians<b> David Bowie</b> and <b>Jackson Browne</b>. Bowie asked Vaughan to play on his upcoming studio album Let's Dance and Browne offered the band free use of his personal studio in Los Angeles to record an album.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In March 1983, veteran record producer <b>John Hammond Sr.</b> of Epic Records signed Vaughan and <b>Double Trouble</b> and released their debut album, <i>Texas Flood</i> in June of that year. While successfully touring, the group released the albums, <i>Couldn't Stand the Weather</i> (1984) and <i>Soul to Soul </i>(1985), the latter of which featured keyboardist Reese Wynans. Although his career had progressed successfully, Vaughan checked into a rehabilitation hospital in Atlanta, Georgia to give up a cocaine and alcohol addiction and returned to touring with the band. In June 1989, they released<i> In Step</i>, which earned them a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Performance. On August 27, 1990, Vaughan died in a helicopter crash following a performance in East Troy, Wisconsin.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Vaughan derived his uniquely eclectic yet intense style from a variety of musical genres. He was influenced by blues musicians including<b> Albert King, Freddie King, Otis Rush</b>, and <b>Muddy Waters</b>, as well as rock guitarists such as<b> Jimi Hendrix</b> and<b> Lonnie Mack</b>. His guitar playing, for which he has received wide critical recognition, reflected the pentatonic blues scales. He ranked number seven on Rolling Stone's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists" and was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2000, the same year a memorial statue in his honor was erected in Austin's Auditorium Shores park. Vaughan is widely considered one of the greatest musicians to come from the state of Texas.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Shirley Ann Manson</b> (born 26 August 1966) is a Scottish singer, songwriter, musician and actress, best known internationally as the lead singer of the alternative rock band <b>Garbage</b>. For much of her international career Manson commuted between her home city of Edinburgh and the United States to record with<b> Garbage</b>; she now lives and works in Los Angeles. Manson gained media attention for her forthright style, rebellious attitude and distinctive voice.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Manson's musical career began in her teens when she was approached to perform backing vocals and keyboards for Scottish band <b>Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie</b>. Quickly she developed into a prominent member of the group and developed a formidable stage presence. Manson was approached by her band's record label with the idea of launching her as a solo artist, and recorded an album with her band under the <b>Angelfish</b> name. After seeing Manson in an <b>Angelfish</b> video broadcast only once on MTV's 120 Minutes,<b> Garbage</b> invited Manson to audition and record vocals on a couple of unfinished songs; she eventually co-wrote and co-produced an entire album with the band. The resulting self-titled debut, Garbage, was a critically acclaimed, worldwide hit, and was followed by four studio albums, including the multiple Grammy Award-nominated Version 2.0, and a greatest hits album. Garbage toured worldwide and sold 12 million records over ten years.<br />

In 2006, Manson began to write and record solo material after<b> Garbage</b> was put on "hiatus" and in 2008 was cast in her first professional acting role on the second and final season of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles as series regular Catherine Weaver, a liquid metal T-1001 Terminator. <div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Stephen Glenn "Steve" Martin</b> (born August 14, 1945) is an American comedian, actor, musician, writer, and producer.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Martin came to public notice as a writer for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and later became a frequent guest on The Tonight Show. In the 1970s, Martin performed his offbeat, absurdist comedy routines before packed houses on national tours. Since the 1980s, having branched away from stand-up comedy, Martin has become a successful actor, as well as an author, playwright, pianist and banjo player, eventually earning him an Emmy, Grammy and American Comedy awards, among other honors.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In 2004, Comedy Central ranked Martin at sixth place in a list of the 100 greatest stand-up comics. He was awarded an honorary Oscar at the Academy’s 5th Annual Governors Awards in 2013.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
While he has played banjo since an early age, and included music in his comedy routines from the beginning of his professional career, he has increasingly dedicated his career to music in the past decade and a half; acting less and spending much of his professional life playing banjo, recording and touring with various bluegrass acts, including Earl Scruggs, with whom he won a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental Performance in 2002. He released his first solo music album, The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo, in 2009, for which he won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Patrick Bruce "Pat" Metheny </b>(born August 12, 1954) is an American jazz guitarist and composer.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
He is the leader of the <b>Pat Metheny Group</b> and is also involved in duets, solo works and other side projects. His style incorporates elements of progressive and contemporary jazz, post-bop, Latin jazz and jazz fusion. Metheny has three gold albums and 20 Grammy Awards. He is the brother of jazz flugelhornist and journalist <b>Mike Metheny</b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCDy1IIN0MLu3mVOENYx0K4sZAB7jDIH9OD6FfO7p40S5Jlc1xCCJVvFylRa2iWL4Khb9ioFkQ-LslGOcoUwB7cGe-ht77_DmHGx4aUAO99nLoZ1wuTLJin0u3qcMl5QCuuNXrNXm1p0m7/s1600/Metheny_Pat_byJimmyKatz_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCDy1IIN0MLu3mVOENYx0K4sZAB7jDIH9OD6FfO7p40S5Jlc1xCCJVvFylRa2iWL4Khb9ioFkQ-LslGOcoUwB7cGe-ht77_DmHGx4aUAO99nLoZ1wuTLJin0u3qcMl5QCuuNXrNXm1p0m7/s400/Metheny_Pat_byJimmyKatz_4.jpg" width="305" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Continuing the tradition of jazz guitarists borrowing tones and techniques from their rock counterparts, Metheny has made his own additions to the jazz guitar tone palette.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><u>Six-string electric</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Metheny's tone, which has evolved over the years, involves using the natural full-frequency response of his hollow-body guitar, combined with high-midrange settings on his amplifier to create a smooth, sustaining lead sound that is virtually devoid of piercing treble yet is able to cut through a dense mix. By using digital signal processing that involves digital delay/chorus and reverb, he has created a big, rich, and resonant instrumental voice.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><u>Twelve-string electric</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Metheny was an early proponent of the twelve-string guitar in jazz. During his 1975 tour with the Gary Burton "Quartet" (five people, including Metheny), he primarily played electric 12-string guitar against the 6-string work of resident guitarist <b>Mick Goodrick</b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Prior to Metheny, <b>Pat Martino</b> had used the electric twelve-string guitar on a studio album, Desperado, and <b>John McLaughlin</b> had used a double-neck electric guitar with the <b>Mahavishnu Orchestra</b>. <b>Ralph Towner</b> was perhaps the first to use acoustic 12-string guitar extensively in Jazz ("The Moors", from <b>Weather Report</b>'s I Sing the Body Electric, Columbia, 1972), and <b>Larry Coryell</b> and <b>Philip Catherine</b> made extensive use of acoustic twelve string in alternate tunings at the 1975 Montreux Jazz Festival, later releasing some of the material on their 1976 Twin House album. Metheny used 12-string guitar on his debut album, Bright Size Life (1977), including alternate tuning on "Sirabhorn", and on later albums ("San Lorenzo, from<b> Pat Metheny Group</b> and <b>Travels</b>).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcRlo_vjxmoXkqDEsXepTtLN7DQpYcYwrjKi89rcNSqMTPkWgCGcZmAmrclnTAzcAkfTIWhZAmH5E4g1YO34VnxWsQIXsWU62rFx9i6vYjQzmpXWZlDzSlB9WgSVRAmMKO-Tl12Kw_t-na/s1600/Metheny-Pat8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcRlo_vjxmoXkqDEsXepTtLN7DQpYcYwrjKi89rcNSqMTPkWgCGcZmAmrclnTAzcAkfTIWhZAmH5E4g1YO34VnxWsQIXsWU62rFx9i6vYjQzmpXWZlDzSlB9WgSVRAmMKO-Tl12Kw_t-na/s400/Metheny-Pat8.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><u>Guitar synthesizer</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Metheny was also one of the first jazz guitarists to make heavy use of the Roland GR-300 Guitar Synthesizer. While <b>John Abercrombie </b>and <b>Bill Frisell</b> also used Roland guitar synthesizers heavily in the 1980s, Metheny is the only one of the three who still uses the instrument regularly. Unlike many guitar synthesizer users, Metheny limits himself to a very small number of sounds. In interviews, he has argued that each of the timbres achievable through guitar synthesis should be treated as a separate instrument, and that he has tried to master each of these "instruments" instead of using the synthesizer for incidental color. One of the "patches" that he has often used is on Roland's JV-80 "Vintage Synth" expansion card, entitled titled "Pat's GR-300". Metheny was also heavily into the Synclavier Digital Audio Workstation made by New England Digital and brought it out on tour starting in the early 1980s.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><u>42-string Pikasso guitar</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Metheny plays a custom-made Pikasso I created by Canadian luthier<b> Linda Manzer</b> on "Into the Dream" and on the albums Quartet, Imaginary Day, Jim Hall & Pat Metheny, Trio→Live, and the Speaking of Now Live and Imaginary Day DVDs. Metheny has also used the guitar in his guest appearances on other artists' albums.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Manzer has also made many acoustic guitars for Metheny, including a mini guitar, an acoustic sitar guitar, and the baritone guitar, which Metheny used for the recording of One Quiet Night. He also used the Pikasso on <b>Metheny Mehldau Quartet</b>, his second collaboration with pianist Mehldau and his trio sidemen<b> Larry Grenadier</b> and <b>Jeff Ballard;</b> the Pikasso is featured on Metheny's composition "The Sound of Water".</div>

In 1978, at the age of 19, Bush topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks with her debut single, "Wuthering Heights", becoming the first woman to have a UK number one with a self-written song. She has since released ten albums, three of which topped the UK Albums Chart. She has had 25 UK Top 40 hit singles, including the Top 10 hits "Wuthering Heights", "The Man with the Child in His Eyes", "Babooshka", "Running Up That Hill" (as well as its 2012 remix), "Don't Give Up" (a duet with <b>Peter Gabriel</b>) and "King of the Mountain".</div>

Bush has been nominated 13 times for British Phonographic Industry accolades, and in 1987 she won a Brit Award for Best British Female Artist. During the course of her career, she has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards. In 2002, she was recognized with an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. She is the first British solo female artist to top the UK album charts and the first female artist ever to enter the album chart at Number 1. She is also the first (and to date only) female artist to have Top 5 albums in the UK charts in five successive decades. In August 2014, she became the first female performer to have eight albums in the Official UK Top 40 Albums Chart simultaneously, putting her at number three for simultaneous UK Top 40 albums (behind <b>Elvis Presley</b> with 12 albums in 1977, and <b>The Beatles</b> in 2009 with 11 albums); altogether she had 11 albums in the top 50.</div>

<b>Prince Roger Nelson </b>(June 7, 1958 - April 21, 2016), known by his mononym <b>Prince</b>, is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actor. A major figure in popular music for over three decades, <b>Prince</b> is renowned as an innovator and is widely-known for his eclectic work, flamboyant stage presence and wide vocal range. <div style="text-align: center;">
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, <b>Prince</b> developed an interest in music at an early age, writing his first song at age seven. After recording songs with his cousin's band 94 East, 19-year-old <b>Prince</b> recorded several unsuccessful demo tapes before releasing his debut album, For You, in 1978 under the guidance of Manager Owen Husney. His 1979 album, Prince, went platinum due to the success of the singles "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover". His next three records, Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981) and 1999 (1982), continued his success, showcasing <b>Prince</b>'s trademark of prominently sexual lyrics and incorporation of elements of funk, dance and rock music. In 1984, he began referring to his backup band as the <b>Revolution</b> and released Purple Rain, which served as the soundtrack to his film debut of the same name.</div>

After releasing the albums Around the World in a Day (1985) and Parade (1986), The <b>Revolution </b>disbanded and <b>Prince</b> released the critically acclaimed double album Sign "O" the Times (1987) as a solo artist. He released three more solo albums before debuting The New Power Generation band in 1991. After changing his stage name to an unpronounceable symbol, also known as the "Love Symbol", in 1993, he began releasing new albums at a faster pace to remove himself from contractual obligations to Warner Bros; he released five records between 1994 and 1996 before signing with Arista Records in 1998. In 2000, he began referring to himself as "<b>Prince</b>" once again. He has released fourteen albums since then, including his latest, Art Official Age, released on September 30, 2014.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Steven Patrick Morrissey </b>(born 22 May 1959), commonly known by his last name, Morrissey, or Moz, is a British singer and lyricist. He rose to prominence in the 1980s as the lyricist and vocalist of the rock band <b>The Smiths</b>. The band were highly successful in the United Kingdom but broke up in 1987, and Morrissey began a solo career, making the top ten of the UK Singles Chart on ten occasions. His first solo album, 1988's Viva Hate, entered the UK Albums Chart at number one.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Morrissey is widely regarded as an important innovator in the indie music scene; music magazine NME considers <b>Morrissey </b>to be "one of the most influential artists ever", while The Independent says, "Most pop stars have to be dead before they reach the iconic status he has reached in his lifetime." In 2004, Pitchfork Media called him "one of the most singular figures in Western popular culture from the last 20 years."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Morrissey</b>'s lyrics have been described as "dramatic, bleak, funny vignettes about doomed relationships, lonely nightclubs, the burden of the past and the prison of the home". He is also noted for his unusual baritone vocal style (though he sometimes uses falsetto), his quiff haircut and his dynamic live performances. In the media, controversies have been caused by his forthright and often contrarian opinions, and he has also attracted media attention for his advocacy of vegetarianism and animal rights. He describes himself in his autobiography as an animal protectionist.</div>

<b>Bernard John "Bernie" Taupin </b>(born 22 May 1950) is an English lyricist, poet, and singer, best known for his long-term collaboration with <b>Elton John</b>, writing the lyrics for the majority of the star's songs, making his lyrics some of the best known in pop-rock's history.</div>

In 1971, journalist Penny Valentine wrote that "<b>Bernie Taupin</b>'s lyrics were to become as important as <b>Elton </b>[<b>John</b>] himself, proved to have a mercurial brilliance. Not just in their atmospheric qualities and descriptive powers, but in the way he handled words to form them into straightforward poems that were easy to relate to."</div>

<b>Gary Malcolm Wright </b>(born April 26, 1943) is an American singer, songwriter and musician, best known for his 1976 hit songs "Dream Weaver" and "Love Is Alive", and for his role in helping establish the synthesizer as a leading instrument in rock and pop music. Wright's breakthrough album, The Dream Weaver (1975), came after he had spent seven years in London as, alternately, a member of the British heavy rock band<b> Spooky Tooth </b>and a solo artist on A&M Records. While in England, he played keyboards on former<b> Beatle George Harrison</b>'s All Things Must Pass triple album (1970), so beginning a friendship that inspired the Indian religious themes and spirituality inherent in Wright's subsequent songwriting. His work since the late 1980s has embraced world music and the new age genre, although none of his post-1976 releases has matched the popularity of The Dream Weaver.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
A former child actor, Wright performed on Broadway in the hit musical Fanny before studying medicine and then psychology in New York and Berlin. After meeting <b>Chris Blackwell</b> of Island Records in Europe, Wright moved to London, where he helped establish <b>Spooky Tooth</b> as a popular live act. He also served as the band's principal songwriter on their recordings – among them, the well-regarded albums Spooky Two (1969) and You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw (1973). His solo album Footprint (1971), recorded with contributions from Harrison, coincided with the formation of Wright's short-lived band <b>Wonderwheel</b>, which included guitarist <b>Mick Jones</b>. Also during the early 1970s, Wright played on notable recordings by <b>B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson</b> and <b>Ronnie Spector</b>, while his musical association with Harrison endured until shortly before the latter's death in 2001.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Wright turned to film soundtrack work in the early 1980s, which led to him re-recording his most popular song, "Dream Weaver", for the 1992 comedy Wayne's World. Following <b>Spooky Tooth</b>'s reunion tour in 2004, Wright has performed live frequently, either as a member of <b>Starr's All-Starr Band</b>, with his own live band, or on subsequent <b>Spooky Tooth </b>reunions. Wright's most recent solo albums, including Waiting to Catch the Light (2008) and Connected (2010), have all been issued on his Larklio record label. In 2014, Penguin Random House published his autobiography, titled Dream Weaver: Music, Meditation, and My Friendship with George Harrison.</div>

<b>Paul Melvyn Carrack</b> (born 22 April 1951) is an English singer, songwriter, and musician who has recorded as both a solo artist and as a member of several popular bands. The BBC dubbed Carrack "The Man with the Golden Voice", and described him as "something of a national treasure". William Pinfold of Record Collector remarked: "If vocal talent equaled financial success, <b>Paul Carrack </b>would be a bigger name than legends such as <b>Phil Collins </b>or <b>Elton John</b>."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Carrack arose to prominence in the mid-1970s as the frontman and principal songwriter of <b>Ace</b>, and gained further recognition for his work as a solo artist and for his tenures as a member of <b>Roxy Music, Squeeze</b> and <b>Roger Waters'</b> backing group, The Bleeding Heart Band, intermittently handling lead vocals on Squeeze and Waters recordings. From the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, he enjoyed considerable success as the co-frontman (with <b>Paul Young</b>) and a songwriter for <b>Mike + The Mechanics</b>; following Young's death in 2000, Carrack served as the band's sole lead vocalist until his departure in 2004. He maintains an active solo career to the present day.</div>

Carrack sang some of his affiliated bands' best-known hits, including <b>Ace</b>'s "How Long?"; <b>Squeeze</b>'s "Tempted"; and <b>Mike + The Mechanics</b>' "Silent Running", "The Living Years" and "Over My Shoulder". He also performed lead vocals on tracks from the <b>Roger Waters </b>albums Radio K.A.O.S. and The Wall – Live in Berlin, and achieved a major solo hit with "Don't Shed a Tear". Carrack's songs have been recorded by artists such as the <b>Eagles, Diana Ross, Tom Jones, Michael McDonald</b> and <b>Jools Holland</b>, and he has served as a session and/or touring musician for the likes of <b>Elton John, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, B.B. <div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Stanard "Stan" Ridgway </b>(born April 5, 1954) is an American multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter and film and television composer known for his distinctive voice, dramatic lyrical narratives, and eclectic solo albums. He was the original lead singer and a founding member of the band <b>Wall of Voodoo</b>.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The band was named Wall of Voodoo by Ridgway before their first gig, in reference to a comment made by a friend of Ridgway's, while recording and overdubbing a Kalamazoo Rhythm Ace drum machine. While listening to some of the music that created in the studio, Ridgway jokingly compared the multiple-drum-machine- and Farfisa-organ-laden recordings to Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, whereupon the friend commented it sounded more like a "wall of voodoo" and the name stuck.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Wall of Voodoo's music could fairly be described as a cross between early synthesizer pop and Ennio Morricone's soundtracks for Italian director Sergio Leone's epic western films of the 1960s. Adding to the music's distinctiveness was percussive and textural experimentation, i.e. mixing drum machines with unconventional instruments such as pots, pans and various kitchen utensils, raw electronics with interlocking melodic figures as well as twangy spaghetti-western guitar. On top of the mix was Ridgway's unusual vocal style and highly stylized, cinematic narratives heavily influenced by science fiction and film noir, sung from the perspective of ordinary folks and characters wrestling with ironies inside the American Dream.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ridgway embarked on a solo career in 1983, shortly after Wall of Voodoo's appearance at the US Festival that same year. After collaborating on the song, "Don't Box Me In" with Stewart Copeland from the Police for the soundtrack to Francis Ford Coppola's Rumble Fish starring Mickey Rourke, Matt Dillon and Dennis Hopper, he released his first proper solo album, The Big Heat (1986), which included the top 5 European (including UK) hit "Camouflage". This was followed by numerous other solo recordings: Mosquitos (1989),[2] Partyball (1991), Black Diamond (1995), and Anatomy (1999), The Way I Feel Today (1998), a collection of big band standards, and Holiday in Dirt (2002), a compilation of outtakes and previously unreleased songs. Ridgway's album Snakebite: Blacktop Ballads and Fugitive Songs (2005), features the narrative song, "Talkin' Wall Of Voodoo Blues Pt. 1", a history of his former band in song.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Since the early days of Wall of Voodoo, Ridgway has been interested in making music for the cinema. A list of films for which Ridgway has written scores and/or original songs is included below. Ridgway's album Holiday in Dirt was a quasi-cinematic project, with the release of the album accompanied by a showing of 14 short films by various independent filmmakers, each film a visual interpretation of one of the songs on the album. A compilation DVD of the films was released in February 2005.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In 1994, Ridgway began work on a new project in the form of a trio called Drywall, the other members of the trio being Ridgway's wife, keyboardist/vocalist Pietra Wexstun of the band Hecate's Angels (who had previously worked with Ridgway on Mosquitos and Partyball), and former Rain Parade drummer Ivan Knight. In 1995, Drywall released its first album (first of a "trilogy of apocalyptic documents"), titled Work the Dumb Oracle. A short film directed by Carlos Grasso titled The Drywall Incident was released the same year. An extended, instrumental soundtrack album for The Drywall Incident was released in 1996.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Stan Ridgway and Drywall regrouped in 2006 to release the album Barbeque Babylon, the third "apocalyptic document" with the single "The AARP Is After Me". The new Drywall lineup features Rick King on guitars and bass and Bruce Zelesnik on drums and percussion. In 2008 Ridgway and Wexstun released "Silly Songs For Kids Vol. 1", a collection of children's songs that feature the duo and also the saxophonist and woodwind player Ralph Carney.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ridgway has also contributed to albums and projects by producer Hal Willner, Frank Black and the Catholics, the Flesh Eaters, the Divine Horsemen, The Ray Campi Quartet, the Fibonaccis, and Roger McGuinn.</div>

<b>Agnetha Åse Fältskog</b> (Swedish pronunciation: [aŋ²neːta ²fɛltskuːɡ], born 5 April 1950) is a Swedish musician, singer, songwriter, actress, and author. She achieved success in Sweden after the release of her debut album Agnetha Fältsko in 1968, and reached international stardom as a member of the pop group <b>ABBA</b>, which has sold over 380 million albums and singles worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists in history.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
After the break-up of ABBA, Fältskog found some success as a solo artist in the 1980s, though also became more solitary, avoiding outside publicity and settling on the Stockholm County island of Ekerö. Fältskog stopped recording music for almost 17 years until she released a new album in 2004.The singer returned again in 2013 with A, her highest-U.K.-charting solo album to date.</div>

Over four years ago, I came across a video from a new band that made my jaw hit the floor. Interesting look, great chops and a very hard and technical but wonderfully melodic sound. Threw them on my prog rock station immediately and bought the full EP. I still listen to it, a lot.</div>

The band is finally going to release their debut album March 23rd. Thought it would be a good time to refresh your memory/introduce this band from France that I absolutely love. Some videos from their EP plus the preview of the new album. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Michael Leslie "Mike" Peters</b> (born 25 February 1959) is a Welsh musician, best known as the lead singer of <b>The Alarm</b>. After the band split up in 1991, Peters wrote and released solo work, before reconstituting <b>The Alarm </b>in 2000. Additionally, he is co-founder of the Love Hope Strength Foundation. Between 2011 and 2013, Peters was the vocalist for <b>Big Country </b>as well as <b>The Alarm</b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Peters' musical debut came on 10 October 1975, when he fronted <b>Hairy Hippie</b> (named by the disc jockey <b>James Alexander Barr</b>), a band formed with his schoolmates to perform at his sister's 21st birthday party at the Talardy Hotel in St Asaph. The first song performed that night was a cover version of "If You Think You Know How To Love Me" by <b>Smokie</b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
His first band proper was <b>The Toilets</b>, formed after he saw the <b>Sex Pistols</b> play at Chester in 1976. The first song <b>The Toilets</b> played live was "Nothing To Do" at the Palace Hotel in Rhyl.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Peters, along with <b>MacDonald, Dave Sharp</b> and <b>Nigel Twist</b> (then called <b>Nigel Buckle</b>), formed a band called<b> Seventeen</b> in 1978. The first song Seventeen played was "Pop Generation" at the Bee (now Station) Hotel in Rhyl on 27 May 1978. One single was released in 1979 on the Vendetta label entitled "Don't Let Go."</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
In 1981 The Alarm was formed and moved to London to tour the club circuit. They were signed by the IRS label. Initially formed as a punk band, the band soon embraced rock, displaying marked influences from Welsh language and culture. By opening for acts such as <b>U2 </b>and <b>Bob Dylan</b>, they became a popular alternative rock band of the 1980s. They retain a loyal following.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>The Alarm</b>'s highest charting single in Britain was 1983's "Sixty Eight Guns", which reached number 17 in the UK Singles Chart. Their 1984 album, Declaration, which contained "Sixty Eight Guns", peaked at number six in the UK Albums Chart.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>George Harrison, MBE</b> (25 February 1943 – 29 November 2001) was an English guitarist, singer, songwriter, and music and film producer who achieved international fame as the lead guitarist of the <b>Beatles</b>. Often referred to as "the quiet Beatle", Harrison embraced Indian mysticism and helped broaden the horizons of his fellow Beatles as well as their Western audience by incorporating Indian instrumentation in their music. Although the majority of the<b> Beatles</b>' songs were written by <b>John Lennon</b> and <b>Paul McCartney</b>, most<b> Beatles </b>albums from 1965 onwards contained at least two Harrison compositions. His songs for the group included "Taxman", "Within You Without You", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Here Comes the Sun" and "Something", the last of which became the <b>Beatles</b>' second-most covered song.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Harrison's earliest musical influences included <b>George Formby </b>and <b>Django Reinhardt</b>; <b>Carl Perkins, Chet Atkins </b>and<b> Chuck Berry</b> were subsequent influences. By 1965 he had begun to lead the Beatles into folk rock through his interest in the <b>Byrds</b> and <b>Bob Dylan</b>, and towards Indian classical music through his use of the sitar on "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)". Having initiated the band's embracing of Transcendental Meditation in 1967, he subsequently developed an association with the Hare Krishna movement. After the band's break-up in 1970, Harrison released the triple album All Things Must Pass, a critically acclaimed work that produced his most successful hit single, "My Sweet Lord", and introduced his signature sound as a solo artist, the slide guitar. He also organised the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh with Indian musician <b>Ravi Shankar</b>, a precursor for later benefit concerts such as Live Aid. In his role as a music and film producer, Harrison produced acts signed to the <b>Beatles</b>' Apple record label before founding Dark Horse Records in 1974 and co-founding HandMade Films in 1978.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Harrison released several best-selling singles and albums as a solo performer, and in 1988 co-founded the platinum-selling supergroup the <b>Traveling Wilburys</b>. A prolific recording artist, he was featured as a guest guitarist on tracks by <b>Badfinger, Ronnie Wood</b> and <b>Billy Preston</b>, and collaborated on songs and music with <b>Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr </b>and <b>Tom Petty</b>, among others. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 11 in their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". He is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee – as a member of the Beatles in 1988, and (posthumously) for his solo career in 2004.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Harrison's first marriage, to model <b>Pattie Boyd</b> in 1966, ended in divorce in 1977. The following year he married <b>Olivia Harrison</b> (née Arias), with whom he had one son, Dhani. Harrison died in 2001, aged 58, from lung cancer. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered in the Ganges and Yamuna rivers in India, in a private ceremony according to Hindu tradition. He left an estate of almost £100 million.</div>
